Finding the Perfect Pillow
Princess and the Pillow.
In the fairytale “Princess and the Pea”, the young woman has a restless night because she can’t get comfortable. The fairytale wasn’t very relatable as a child, but as I age I can understand her woes and I believe this is where we use the phrase, “waking up on the wrong side of the bed.” Here is how to find the perfect pillow and create a space for better sleep.
purpose
The main purpose of a pillow is to support neutral spine alignment.
type of sleeper
First, identify your most common sleeping positions, are you a back sleeper, side-sleeper or belly-sleeper? Your habits will help narrow down your pillow choices.
Front sleepers will probably find a flatter pillow more comfortable. Whereas, side sleepers will want the extra support so a loftier higher pillow may be more appropriate. A body pillow can help keep the hips in neutral alignment when you are on your side. Back sleepers want the Goldilock’s pillow, not too flat or too lofty.
size
Size matters. If you are a petite person, a standard pillow size may be sufficient. I prefer a King-size pillow to ensure my neck and shoulders are properly supported.
Material
Finding the perfect material is a trial and error process. Latex pillows were too firm and I preferred softer pillows, but I was waking up with a sore neck and stiff shoulders. I ditched my feather and silk pillows and returned to memory foam for more support.
Change
Pillows have an expiration date. Remember to change your pillows every one to two years. If you’re suddenly waking up with neck or shoulder pain, your old pillow may be the culprit.
Finding the perfect pillow won’t solve all sleeping problems, but it plays a role in determining your quality of sleep and overall well-being, so explore your options the next time you purchase a pillow.
